Top Chef Alum Spike Mendelsohn Wins First Ever Golden Grill and the Annual People’s Choice Awards With Allen Brothers USDA Prime Beef
Chicago, IL (February 2009) – On Thursday evening, February 19, nearly 1800 revelers greeted host Rachael Ray at the 2009 Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival’s annual Amstel Light Burger Bash presented by Allen Brothers where 22 of the country's top chefs, including Bobby Flay, Rick Bayless, Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto and Katie Lee Joel, were on hand to compete for bragging rights for best burger. Turning up the heat at this year’s bash was the unveiling of the new, most eagerly anticipated award – The Allen Brothers Golden Grill. In a searing victory, Top Chef’s Season Four star Spike Mendelsohn lay claim, winning both “The Golden Grill” and “People’s Choice” Awards, serving up mouth watering burgers made from high quality Allen Brothers USDA Prime Beef!
Allen Brothers, with a century old tradition as one of the nation’s premiere meat purveyors, has provided the key ingredient to the winning burgers for the past three consecutive Burger Bash events – two in South Beach and one in New York City. “Allen Brothers has always been synonymous with top quality and great taste. This third win truly demonstrates our commitment to providing the very best in the beef industry. We are delighted that our beef was recognized as the best in the competition, winning the two top awards of the evening” says Allen Brothers President, Todd Hatoff.
In contrast to the "People's Choice” Award which is determined by the event attendees who cast their votes for their favorite, the “Golden Grill” is judged by a who's who of the culinary world. This year’s judges included Dana Cowin, Editor-in-Chief of Food & Wine; Brooke Johnson, President of Food Network; Chef Art Smith of Chicago’s Table 52 and Washington, D.C.’s Art and Soul; Ben Leventhal, Editor-in-Chief of Eater and Josh Ozersky, Restaurant Editor of CitySearch. Graded on a scale of 1-5 for originality, quality and flavor, the Golden Grill upped the ante for the 22 top chefs who came from the best burger outlets around the country to attempt to create the ultimate winning burger.
Competition was intense as the chefs grilled, flipped and stacked their way to a big win. At the end of the evening both the event's attendees and the tastemaker’s panel concurred – the stand-out winner was Top Chef’s Spike Mendelsohn and his "Coletti’s Smokehouse Burger" featuring Allen Brothers succulent USDA Prime Beef, Applewood bacon, sharp Vermont Cheddar, fried Vidalia onion rings and smoky chipotle barbeque sauce. Allen Brothers salutes Chef Mendelsohn for his outstanding performance and looks forward to extending their winning streak to four at the upcoming 2009 Food Network New York City Wine & Food Festival in October.
